$5 Meal Challenge, 9/17/11, 12-2 pm
Slow Food North Louisiana is hosting a $5 Meal Challenge community potluck meal at Camp Forbing September 17 at noon. The purpose of this event is to challenge the popular belief that it is more expensive and more time consuming to eat food that is good, clean and healthy than food that is fast and processed.
Attendees are asked to prepare a one-pot meal or multi-dishes that if prepared on a family of 4 scale would be tasty, easy and affordable ($5 per person or less). Bring your grocery receipt and show off just how crafty you can be with groceries!
There will be cooking demonstrations (including one for kids) and a Taster's Choice prize awarded to the favorite potluck dish. If you would like your recipe included in the take-away $5 Meal Challenge Recipe Book, please email it by September 11 to slowfoodnla@gmail.com
Cost is $5 per person. If you are attending with children, we will go on the honor system so use your judgment about whether they will join in the meal and pay accordingly.
Slow Food North Louisiana will supply beverages and all meal utility items (plates, utensils, napkins).

Year of the Healthy Child Kick-off Reception, 8/15/11, 4-6 pm
Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover and Bossier City Mayor Lo Walker have proclaimed the 2011-12 school year as the “Year of the Healthy Child” in recognition of the work of schools and local community groups to promote healthy lifestyles for our children as well as to draw attention to the growing rate of childhood obesity (31% of Louisiana students are obese) and the need for better coordination of effective initiatives. “Year of the Healthy Child” is the brainchild of Krewe de les Femmes Mystique, a local Mardi Gras krewe and philanthropic organization.
Slow Food North Louisiana is one of the organizations participating in Year of the Healthy Child. With Slow Food USA's long-running advocacy for healthier school lunches, school gardens, and educating American families about cleaner eating in general, it was an easy decision to jump on board with the other wonderful organizations participating like the YMCA, Shreveport Green, Volunteers of America, the Caddo and Bossier School Systems, and the LSU AgCenter among many others.
The Year of the Healthy Child officially kicks off Monday, August 15th from 4pm – 6pm at the Louisiana State University Health Shreveport School of Allied Health Professions, Faculty Clinic, 1450 Claiborne Avenue, Shreveport (ground floor). Proclamations will be read and participating organizations will share information on their current and future healthy initiatives.
